Spice up our Menu
Even though each of our flavors are delicious and nutritious by themselves, sometimes it is fun to add ingredients and present them in different ways. This not only helps with babies and toddlers who are ready for finger foods, but it adds a little fun and variety, which is the spice of life. Below you will find some wonderful ways to add ingredients to our food, and which of our foods are great to use these ideas with.
Yummy Porridge
By adding a few spoonfuls of infant cereal to our silky and smooth purees, you can help to get your little one used to thicker textures. This also is a great way to get more grains into your child's diet.
Flavors to use: Roasted Roots, Mary Pears, Orchard Fresh, Green Legume, Wholesome Harvest
Veggie Balls
From experience with our own children, we know that many of your children will go through a spoon strike phase. Don't worry, they will move on. Here is our favorite way to get through this challenging phase. Add cereal to purees until food is the consistency of soft dough. Roll into half-inch balls, and let your little one feed himself. (Please note that all of our Hearty and Chunky, and Thick and saucy varieties can be rolled into balls without the addition of any ingredients.)
Flavors to use: Roasted Roots, Mary Pears, Orchard Fresh, Green Legume, Wholesome Harvest
Kiddie Pies
This is a wonderful way to add protein and whole grains to your child's diet while still sneaking in those fruits and veggies! Add 1 cup flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder and ½ cup milk to one 4 oz. container of any of the flavors listed below, and mix. Pour mixture into muffin pan (mini muffin pans are a fun choice). Bake for 25-30 minutes in a 350 oven.
Flavors to Use: Roasted Roots, Mary Pears, Orchard Fresh, Green Legume, Wholesome Harvest
Hearty Hotcakes
By using your favorite pancake mix you can kick up your little one's pancakes. Mix one 4 oz. portion of the varieties listed below with your usual pancake mix. Make silver dollar sized pancakes, and serve 3 or 4 at a time. This is a great item to make a large batch of and freeze. It is so easy to take a few out of the freezer at a time!
Flavors to Use: Roasted Roots, Mary Pears, Orchard Fresh, Green Legume, Wholesome Harvest
Mix and Max flavors
Our Thick and Saucy and Hearty and Chunky varieties can be mixed with our silky and smooth varieties to add more nutritional value, and lots of flavor, to meals. Here are some of our favorite combinations:
- Moroccan Spice and Orchard Fresh, Mary pears or roasted roots.
- Grits and Greens and Roasted Roots
- Divine Nectar and Mary Pear or Orchard Fresh
- Bubby's Chicken Soup and Green Legume
- Mediterranean Medley and Green Legume or Roasted Roots
- Lip-Smacking Mac and roasted roots or Wholesome Harvest (which is a thick and saucy variety)
Protein Feast
Getting your children their fruits and veggies is very important. Just as important is adding protein to their diet. Our yummy varieties work well with additions of all sorts of meats, including poultry, fish, beef, lamb and tofu. Play with the combinations yourself, but here are a couple of our favorites:
-Morrocan Spice and steamed tofu, ground lamb or beef
-Mediterranean Medley and ground or chunked poultry
-Wholesome Harvest and any sort of flaky white fish
-Grits and Greens and salmon
Our Reviews
We would love to hear from you, please take a moment to write your own review about your Urban Baby Gourmet experience.
"My baby is a super picky eater. But she loves so many of the urban baby foods. Especially the grits and cheese. They use local organic veggies, and even sneak in veggies my kids won't eat normally. Their prices are great, and I don't have to cook for my sweety myself. This stuff rocks!"

"I purchased a months supply for my 11 month old when our family was in the process of selling and buying a home. Â I knew I wouldn't have time to make food for my daughter. Â Urban Baby Gourmet was a life saver! Â The food is delicious and my daughter loves EVERY KIND that I bought!!! Plus, the girls that run the show are really sweet and sincerely care about what goes into babies bellies."

"I must say, I am very impressed! Being a pretty avid cook and baby food maker, yours is so much better than mine, and I think the addition of spices is so smart! Like I said, Seamus would not eat fruit baby food before because of the acidity, even homemade, and the spices seem to counter the acid taste. The fiber is wonderful, too. There is no fiber in store-bought baby food. I just think your food is so healthy, better than I can do myself, and delicious!
I'll stop by the farmers market again this weekend, see what the baby likes, and order after that. I really can't say enough after throwing out countless jars of baby food. Yours is so much better!

"Thanks for the excellent food. I thought I'd tell you that the food is great for teaching Sophia to self-feed with a spoon. Its a nice thick consistency so it sticks to the spoon and she doesn't get it everywhere. Perfect!"

How is Urban Baby Gourmet different from organic jarred baby food?
Urban Baby Gourmet food is fresher than organic jarred baby food. To undergo the canning process, jarred food must be heated to very high temperatures'much higher than food is generally cooked at home'that often deplete some of the food's best nutrients. Jarred food also many have sat on a shelf for months or even a year, which means the food inside, while still healthy to eat, may have been picked more than a year ago. There is no way that jarred food can compare to fresh food in nutritional benefits or taste. While our babies tried and ate some of the simple fruit and veggie jars, the more complex jarred meals rarely got the seal of approval from our kids. Our food has passed the test and is handmade locally by mothers, like you, not mass produced by a large, out-of-state manufacturer.
How is Urban Baby Gourmet different from homemade baby food?
Urban Baby Gourmet is comparable to food made in your own home in the sense that it is purchased and prepared fresh for your baby. However, there are also several key differences. Urban Baby Gourmet food is made in a commercial commissary kitchen, so it meets all state health specifications that a home kitchen cannot. Because we also utilize fresh organic herbs and spices, it is more cost effective and efficient than making these same dishes at home. While we fully support making your own homemade baby food (after all, we did it ourselves!), some of these recipes take some time and are best prepared in larger quantities than make sense to do at home for one baby. We hope our food can serve as a great complement to your own homemade recipes or can take the place of your homemade food in particularly hectic weeks or months.
Where can I find Urban Baby Gourmet?
Please visit our Find Us page for the our current locations and upcoming events. Please contact us for more pickup and delivery options.
From where and how do you get your food?
We purchase food once a week from local produce companies that serve as a link between Colorado farmers and consumers. Occasionally, we obtain organic food from our local CSAs (community supported agriculture), big box stores such as Whole Foods, or our own vegetable and herb gardens. As part of our business model, we use predominantly Colorado ingredients to make our recipes. However, at times when local is not an option, we use organic ingredients grown in other parts of the Western USA as much as possible. We prepare all our food once a week for home delivery and farmer's markets, using only stainless steel or glass cookware and appliances.
How long is your food good to eat?
Our baby food is good to eat for three days fresh and up to three months frozen. Once defrosted, it has a three day shelf life in the fridge. If kept in the freezer we recommend consuming during the first month for optimal nutritional benefit. Defrosted food that has been in your freezer between one to three months it is still safe for your baby to consume, after three months the food will start to lose its nutritional benefit.
Where do you make the food?
We may have hatched the idea for our business in our own respective kitchens, but all the food Urban Baby Gourmet currently produces is made at the Kitchen Network on Morrison Road, a USDA and Colorado Dept of Agriculture certified commercial commissary kitchen. The kitchen is part of the Morrison Road Neighborhood Business Revitalization Area, so supporting our company is also helping support the renewal of a previously blighted area in west-central Denver.
What methods of payment do you take?
We currently are accepting cash, local personal checks with valid ID, bank card, most major credit cards (VISA, Master Card, Discover, American Express) and paypal.
What if my baby doesn't like it? Can I get a refund?
We all know babies go through phases. One minute they like something, the next they don't. However, our food is good enough for mommies and daddies to eat, too. (In fact, it's a nice diet trend to eat baby food'if portion control is a concern!) In light of that, we feel that even if your baby won't eat it, someone will. However, don't hesitate to contact us if you have a problem with any product. If you are not fully satisfied (for some reason other than a picky eater) please let us know and we will work out a solution!
Do you have food for older babies and toddlers?
As our own babies are now talking and walking and rapidly heading into toddler world, we have this stage particularly in mind! Our recipes in the Thick & Saucy and Hearty & Chunky menus are toddler friendly. Several recipes are particularly friendly to toddlers who only want to self-feed, be it by hand or by spoon.
